Welcome to the mountain kingdom of Bhutan. On arrival at Paro airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel located in the heart of Thimphu, the modern capital town of Bhutan. The center of government, religion and commerce, Thimphu is a unique city with an unusual mixture of modern development fused with ancient traditions. With a population of about 90,000, it is perhaps still the world’s only capital city without a traffic light.
Later you’ll take an exploratory walk around the local marketplace located a few minutes walk from the hotel, where you’ll visit the local craft bazaar, offering up an abundance of genuine Bhutanese arts & crafts.

    Overnight in Thimpu.

After breakfast, you will drive to visit the oldest monastery in Bhutan. Built-in the 16th century, Pangri Zampa is now a monastic school where Buddhist student monks learn Lamaism and astrology based on Buddhist philosophy.
After lunch in one of Thimphu’s local eateries, you will continue your drive to Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang) – home to the largest statue of Buddha in the country and offers breathtaking views of the Thimphu Valley. Later you will visit Tashichho Dzong: “Fortress of the Glorious Religion”. This is the center of government and religion, and presently houses the throne room and offices of the king. Built-in 1641 by the political and religious unifier of Bhutan, Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was reconstructed in the 1960s in a traditional Bhutanese manner – without nails or architectural plans.

    Overnight in Thimpu.

After an early breakfast enjoy a dramatic drive (approx. 5 hours including scenic stops) over the high mountain pass of Dochu La (3,080m) to Punakha passing through dense forests of oak and rhododendron trees.
The journey continues over the 3,080m mountain pass where on a clear day, the towering Himalayan peaks are clearly visible. The highway follows the scenic Dang Chhu before climbing through forests where you will stop briefly at Dochula Pass to take in the grand vista of the eastern Himalayan Range.
On arrival in Punakha, you will have time to rest before visiting Punakha Dzong, built strategically at the junction of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in 1637, by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Serving as the religious and administrative center of the region, Punakha Dzong has played an important role in Bhutan's history.
Following this, you will visit the nearby Rinchengang Village, one of the oldest villages in Bhutan. Here you will experience traditional architecture and delightful local people in a remote corner of sleepy Punakha Valley, where an ancient way of life has remained unchanged for generations. The majority of the population of Bhutan continues to live as it has for centuries – in small isolated farms and hamlets, surrounded by terraced fields of rice, maize, and buckwheat.

      Overnight in Punakha.

Early morning, take a short hike up through fields of chilies and cabbages to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, which was built to remove negative forces and promote peace, stability and harmony in the changing world. The Chorten dominates the upper Punakha Valley with commanding views across the Mo Chhu River and up towards the mountainous peaks of Gasa and beyond.
After lunch, embark on an excursion to the village of Talo – located just above Punakha Valley. Built on a plateau with majestic views across the valley, this charming village showcases beautiful farmhouses where flowers, corn and sweet peas are grown in abundance.
Following this you will visit the Nalanda Buddhist College - locals call this place ‘Dalayna’ while the monks refer it as ‘Nalanda Buddhist College. Spend the afternoon enjoying buttered tea adorned by a spectacular view and interactions with local monks.
You will also take a short drive to the hilltop overlooking the vast paddy fields and vibrant orchards, to Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang nunnery. Perched on a ridge amid pine trees and overlooking the valleys of Punakha and Wangduephodrang, gleams the magnificent structures of Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang (Temple) which houses a 14-foot bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrigzig Chagtong chentong) as well as other examples of statues made entirely by local Bhutanese artisans.

        Overnight in Punakha.

After breakfast at the hotel, proceed for a walking excursion to Chimi Lakhang. Situated on a hillock in the center of the valley, it is also known as the temple of fertility where locals travel to pray to be blessed with children.
Afterward drive (approx. 5 hours) back to Paro, descending back down from Dochula, and following the road back up the dramatic Wang Chhu and Paro Chhu river valleys. En route, you will visit Simtokha Dzong, the place of profound tantric teaching, which now houses a school for the study of the Dzongkha language.
Upon arrival at Paro, check into the hotel. The beautiful valley of Paro encapsulates within itself a rich culture, scenic beauty and centuries of myths and legends. It is home to many of Bhutan's oldest temples and monasteries.
After some time to rest, you will visit Ta Dzong, originally built as a watchtower, which now houses the National Museum. The extensive collection includes antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons & armor, household objects and a rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts. Following this you will take a short walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dzong, directly translating to “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels”, which has a long and fascinating history. Along with the wooden galleries lining the inner courtyard are fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore such as the old man of long life and scenes from the life of Milarepa.

          Overnight in Paro.

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, you will travel to Satsam Chorten, stopping en route at the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo. The building of this temple marks the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan.
On arrival at the trailhead point, embark on a walking excursion to Taktshang Monastery – one of the most famous of Bhutan’s monasteries, perched on the side of a cliff 900m above the Paro valley floor. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery and hence it is called ‘Tiger’s Nest’. This site has been recognized as a most sacred place, visited by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646 and now by all Bhutanese at least once in their lifetime.
Enjoy lunch at the base of Tiger’s Nest before returning to the hotel for a well-earned rest.
Note: Due to its location, the only way to get to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery is by hiking. There are no vehicles that make the drive up to the monastery. On average it takes between four and five hours to do the round-trip hike, a reasonable level of fitness is required.

            Overnight in Paro.

After a few days of fun and excitement, the day to bid farewell has arrived. Our representatives will escort you to the Paro International Airport as per your flight time.

                May 30, 2023

The first thing that struck me about Bhutan was its pristine landscapes. The country's untouched beauty is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Towering snow-capped mountains, verdant valleys, serene lakes, and dense forests painted a picture-perfect backdrop at every turn. Whether I was trekking through the awe-inspiring landscapes of Paro, exploring the lush Punakha Valley, or catching a glimpse of the majestic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) perched precariously on a cliff, the natural wonders of Bhutan never failed to leave me in awe.

              Good to Know

              Flight Information

All international travelers must fly into Paro International Airport (PBH), the only international airport in Bhutan. Flights to Bhutan are operated by Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines, with direct connections from cities like Kathmandu, Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore, and Dhaka. Due to limited flights, early booking is highly recommended. Our team at Luxury Holidays Nepal can assist in booking your flights to ensure a smooth arrival and departure.

              Bhutan Visa Information

A Bhutanese tourist visa is mandatory for all international travelers (except Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian passport holders). Luxury Holidays Nepal will handle your Bhutan visa application, which requires a scanned passport copy and a visa processing fee. The visa is approved by the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) and issued upon arrival at Paro International Airport, provided you have a pre-booked tour package with a licensed tour operator.

              Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is highly recommended for all visitors to Bhutan. It should cover trip cancellations, medical emergencies, evacuations, and repatriation. Bhutan’s remote terrain means emergency medical evacuations can be costly, so ensure your policy includes helicopter rescue coverage. You must arrange travel insurance in your home country before arrival, as Bhutan does not provide on-arrival insurance services.

              Health and Physical Fitness

While Bhutan’s main sightseeing tours require moderate walking, certain activities, like the Tiger’s Nest Monastery hike, demand good physical fitness. Visitors should be prepared for altitude changes, particularly at locations such as Dochula Pass (3,100m) and Tiger’s Nest (3,120m). If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, consult your doctor before travel. Carry essential medications, as pharmacies in Bhutan have limited supplies.

              Weather Conditions

Bhutan experiences diverse weather conditions depending on the season:

Spring (March-May): Pleasant temperatures with blooming rhododendrons, ideal for trekking and cultural tours.
Summer (June-August): Warm but humid, with occasional monsoon rains, making landscapes lush and green.
Autumn (September-November): Clear skies, crisp air, and breathtaking mountain views—the best time to visit Bhutan.
Winter (December-February): Cold mornings and nights, with snowfall in higher altitudes, but perfect for fewer crowds and serene landscapes.

The best time for travel is March-May and September-November, when weather conditions are most favorable for sightseeing and trekking.

              Cultural Considerations

Bhutan is a deeply spiritual and traditional country, where Buddhism influences daily life. Visitors should respect local customs and traditions, such as:

              • Dress modestly when visiting religious sites—covering shoulders and knees is required.
              • Always walk clockwise around stupas, monasteries, and prayer wheels as a sign of respect.
              • Remove shoes and hats before entering temples and monasteries.
              • Avoid pointing your feet towards Buddhist shrines or religious artifacts when sitting.
              • Seek permission before photographing monks, religious ceremonies, or local people.

              Tipping Guidelines

Tipping is not mandatory in Bhutan but is highly appreciated as a gesture of gratitude for good service. Here are general tipping guidelines:

              • Tour Guides: USD 8-15 per day per traveler.
              • Drivers: USD 5-10 per day per traveler.
              • Hotel Staff & Porters: USD 2-5 per service.
Restaurants: Some upscale restaurants include service charges, but an additional small tip is welcome.

Tipping is based on your satisfaction with the service provided. It is best to tip in Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) or USD.

              Safety & Security

Bhutan is one of the safest travel destinations in the world, with low crime rates and a strong sense of hospitality. However, travelers should still:

              • Keep personal belongings secure in public areas.
              • Respect local laws and cultural norms, as Bhutan has strict regulations on environmental conservation and cultural preservation.
              • Exercise caution when trekking or hiking, as Bhutan’s terrain is mountainous—having a licensed guide is essential.
              • Carry a copy of your passport and visa approval letter at all times.

              Currency and Money Matters

The official currency of Bhutan is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), which is pegged to the Indian Rupee (INR) (INR is also widely accepted in Bhutan). Important money-related considerations:

              • Credit cards are accepted in luxury hotels and major shops, but cash is required in rural areas.
              • ATMs are available in Thimphu and Paro, but they may not always be reliable for foreign cards.
              • It is recommended to carry USD or INR for easy exchange at banks and authorized currency exchange counters.
              • Luxury Holidays Nepal advises exchanging money at the airport or in major cities before heading to remote areas.

              Language and Communication

The official language of Bhutan is Dzongkha, but English is widely spoken, especially in hotels, tourist areas, and by guides. Locals also speak other regional languages, including Sharchop and Nepali.

              • Mobile SIM cards for tourists are available at the airport or in local stores for easy communication.
              • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, but speeds may be slow in remote regions.
It’s helpful to learn a few basic phrases in Dzongkha to enhance your cultural experience:
                Kuzuzangpo la – Hello
                Kadrinchey la – Thank you
                Tashi Delek – Best wishes

              Transportation

All transportation during your Bhutan tour is arranged by Luxury Holidays Nepal, ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free experience.

              • Private Vehicles – Depending on group size, transport is provided in air-conditioned cars, SUVs, or minibuses.
              • Road Conditions – Bhutan’s mountainous roads are scenic but winding, so motion sickness tablets are recommended for those sensitive to long drives.
              • Domestic Flights & Helicopter Services – Available for certain remote areas but are subject to weather conditions and availability.
              • No Public Transport for Tourists – Public buses are not available for foreign tourists, and rental cars for self-driving are not permitted in Bhutan.

              Electricity and Charging

Bhutan operates on 230V supply voltage and uses Type D, Type M, and Type G power sockets (compatible with Indian, British, and some European plugs).

              • Most hotels provide universal plug adapters, but carrying your own is recommended.
              • Electricity is widely available in cities like Thimphu and Paro, but power cuts can occur in rural areas, so carrying a power bank is useful.

              Festivals and Public Holidays

Bhutan is known for its vibrant cultural festivals (Tsechus), which offer a glimpse into its rich Buddhist traditions.

              • Paro Tsechu (March-April) – One of the grandest festivals, featuring masked dances, cultural performances, and religious ceremonies.
              • Thimphu Tsechu (September-October) – A spectacular festival held at Tashichho Dzong, attracting locals and travelers alike.
              • Punakha Drubchen (February-March) – A re-enactment of Bhutan’s historic battles, showcasing warrior dances and local traditions.
              • National Holidays – Many monasteries and institutions remain closed on public holidays, so check festival dates when planning your visit.

              Food and Dining

Bhutanese cuisine is unique and flavorful, often featuring red rice, cheese, and chili-based dishes. Some must-try foods include:

              • Ema Datshi – A signature Bhutanese dish made with chili and cheese.
              • Phaksha Paa – Pork with dried red chilies, a favorite among locals.
              • Momos – Traditional dumplings stuffed with meat or vegetables.
              • Suja (Butter Tea) – A salty, butter-infused tea enjoyed in colder regions.

              Dining options:

              • Meals are included in your tour package, served in hotels and designated restaurants.
              • Vegetarian options are widely available, and special dietary requests can be accommodated with prior notice.
              • Alcohol is available in most hotels and restaurants, but some religious sites and festivals prohibit its consumption.

              Cancellations and Weather-Related Changes

Bhutan’s mountainous terrain means weather can be unpredictable, particularly in the monsoon (June-August) and winter (December-February).

              • Flight Cancellations – Flights to and from Paro International Airport are subject to weather conditions, so travelers should allow buffer days in their itinerary.
              • Tour Adjustments – In case of roadblocks due to landslides or heavy snowfall, alternative sightseeing options will be arranged.
              • Cancellation Policy – Refunds and rescheduling depend on the cancellation terms set by Luxury Holidays Nepal and the Bhutanese Tourism Council regulations.

              Packing List & Essentials

              • Bhutan’s varying altitude and weather require thoughtful packing. Essential items include:
              • Clothing: Layered clothing for changing temperatures, warm jackets for higher altitudes, and rain gear (especially in monsoon season).
              • Footwear: Comfortable trekking/hiking shoes for Tiger’s Nest Monastery hike and sturdy walking shoes for city tours.
              • Accessories: Sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, gloves (for winter), and a scarf for temple visits.
              • Personal Medication: First aid kit, altitude sickness tablets, and any prescribed medications.
              • Backpack: A small daypack for carrying essentials during hikes and day tours.

              Photography & Drone Policy

              • Photography is allowed in most places but prohibited inside temples, monasteries, and religious sites. Always check with your guide before taking photos.
              • Drones require special permission from the Bhutanese authorities and are not permitted in many areas due to security and cultural sensitivity.
