Visa on Arrival: Available at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) and major land borders. To obtain your visa:

Good to Know

Flight Information

Flights to and from Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region, are a key component of the Everest Three Passes Trek. During peak trekking seasons (March-May and September-November), flights are often operated from Ramechhap/Manthali Airport to avoid congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. This requires a 5-6 hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap. In non-peak seasons, flights generally operate directly from Kathmandu. The flight to Lukla is approximately 30-40 minutes and offers stunning views of the Himalayas. Weather conditions can lead to delays or cancellations, so it is advisable to allocate extra days in your itinerary for flexibility. Helicopter options are also available for an alternative or expedited experience.

Nepal Visa Information

A Nepal visa is mandatory for all international travelers entering the country. You can obtain a visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at major land border crossings. To process your visa, you’ll need a passport valid for at least six months, a passport-size photo, and the visa fee:

15 days: USD 30
30 days: USD 50
90 days: USD 125

For faster processing, you can apply online up to 15 days before arrival via the Nepal Immigration website and present the confirmation receipt upon arrival. Alternatively, you can apply at a Nepalese embassy or consulate in your home country. If your trip extends beyond your visa duration, extensions can be processed at immigration offices in Nepal, starting at USD 45 for 15 additional days.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for the Everest Three Passes Trek and must specifically cover high-altitude trekking (above 5,000 meters) and emergency evacuation. This is essential to safeguard against unforeseen events such as flight delays, accidents, illness, or altitude-related emergencies that may require helicopter evacuation. Many reputable providers, such as World Nomads, Allianz, and Tugo, offer suitable plans. Ensure your policy includes medical treatment, air evacuations, trip cancellations, and repatriation. Always carry a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact information during the trek for quick reference in case of an emergency.

Health and Physical Fitness

The Everest Three Passes Trek is a physically demanding journey that requires a good level of fitness and preparation. Trekkers should engage in cardiovascular and strength training, such as running, cycling, and hiking, for at least 6-8 weeks before the trek. Familiarity with walking on uneven terrain and at high altitudes is beneficial. Acclimatization days are included in the itinerary to help your body adjust to the altitude, reducing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It’s crucial to stay hydrated, maintain a balanced diet, and inform your guide immediately if you experience symptoms of AMS. With proper preparation and the support of our experienced guides, you can safely enjoy this challenging and rewarding trek.

Weather Conditions

The weather in the Everest region varies significantly depending on the season. The spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the best times for trekking, offering stable weather, clear skies, and stunning mountain views. During these months, daytime temperatures range between 10°C to 20°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to below freezing, especially at higher altitudes. Winter (December-February) is colder, with temperatures falling well below freezing, but the skies remain clear, making it suitable for experienced trekkers. Monsoon (June-August) brings heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and low visibility, but the lush greenery of the lower regions is a unique sight. Always pack accordingly and be prepared for sudden weather changes, especially at high altitudes.

Cultural Considerations

The Everest region is home to the Sherpa community, known for their rich culture and hospitality. Trekkers are encouraged to respect local customs and traditions. Always seek permission before photographing people or religious sites, and dress modestly, especially in villages and near monasteries. Avoid touching prayer wheels or stones with your feet, and walk clockwise around stupas and mani walls to honor local beliefs. Greeting locals with a polite “Namaste” is appreciated. While Sherpa communities are welcoming, showing respect for their cultural values will enhance your experience and interactions.

Tipping Guidelines

Tipping is a customary and appreciated practice in Nepal, especially for guides, porters, and drivers. For the Everest Three Passes Trek, it is suggested to allocate around 10% of your total trip cost for tips. A common practice is to tip guides and porters based on a 60:40 ratio (e.g., $60 for the guide and $40 for the porter if tipping $100 in total). For teahouse staff or drivers, small tips of USD 2-5 are appropriate. While tipping is not mandatory, it is a meaningful way to show gratitude for the hard work and support of your trekking team.

Safety & Security

Safety is a top priority during the Everest Three Passes Trek. Trekkers should follow the guidance of their guide, especially regarding pacing and acclimatization. Inform your guide immediately if you experience symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), such as headaches or nausea. Carry a basic first aid kit and any personal medications. Avoid trekking alone, especially in remote areas, and always stay on marked trails. While Nepal is generally safe, keep valuables secure and carry cash in smaller denominations. Our experienced guides and porters ensure your safety and security throughout the trek.

Currency and Money Matters

The official currency of Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). ATMs are available in Kathmandu and Namche Bazaar, but they may not be reliable in remote trekking areas, so carry sufficient cash in smaller denominations. Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, authorized exchange counters, or hotels in Kathmandu. Credit cards are accepted in Kathmandu and some teahouses in Namche Bazaar, but cash is essential for expenses along the trek. Plan for costs such as snacks, charging devices, and internet access, which may vary depending on the location. Always keep some extra cash for emergencies or unforeseen expenses.

Accommodation Standards

Accommodation during the Everest Three Passes Trek ranges from cozy teahouses to basic guesthouses. In Kathmandu, you can choose between 3-star, 4-star, or 5-star hotels offering modern amenities like private bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and breakfast. Along the trekking route, teahouses provide clean but basic facilities, including shared rooms with twin beds, communal dining areas, and simple meals. Hot showers and charging facilities are available at most teahouses, usually for an additional fee. While accommodations become more basic at higher altitudes, they are comfortable enough for rest and recovery after a long day of trekking.

Transportation

Transportation for the trek includes a mix of flights, private vehicles, and trekking on foot. The journey starts with a scenic 30-40 minute flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. In peak trekking seasons, flights to Lukla may operate from Ramechhap Airport, requiring a 5-6 hour drive from Kathmandu. Private vehicles are used for airport transfers and local transportation in Kathmandu. Helicopter options are available for a quicker or more luxurious experience, especially in the case of weather-related flight delays.

Electricity and Charging

Most teahouses along the trekking route provide electricity, primarily through solar power. You can charge your electronic devices, such as phones or cameras, for a small fee (typically USD 1-5 per charge). At higher altitudes, charging facilities may be less reliable due to limited power. It’s advisable to carry a power bank or extra batteries. Bring a two-pin (Type C) or three-pin (Type D) adapter to ensure compatibility with Nepal’s sockets. Charging during evenings is recommended, as electricity availability can vary during the day.

Festivals and Public Holidays

Nepal is rich in cultural diversity, and your trek may coincide with vibrant festivals. Major festivals like Dashain, Tihar, and Losar (Tibetan New Year) are celebrated with great enthusiasm in the Everest region. Mani Rimdu, a Sherpa festival observed at Tengboche Monastery, is a highlight for trekkers visiting in November. Be mindful of public holidays, as they may affect transportation and other services, especially in Kathmandu. Participating in or witnessing these festivals can provide unique cultural insights during your journey.

Food and Dining

Teahouses along the trekking route offer a variety of meals to keep you energized. The staple dish is Daal Bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), known for its high energy and nutritional value. Breakfast options include porridge, eggs, toast, and tea. Lunch and dinner menus feature items like noodles, soups, momos (dumplings), and fried rice. Locally sourced ingredients ensure fresh and flavorful meals, but options become limited at higher altitudes. Carry protein bars or snacks for additional energy during the trek, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Cancellations and Weather-Related Changes

Weather in the Everest region can be unpredictable, often leading to flight delays or cancellations, particularly to and from Lukla. Trekkers should allocate extra days in their itinerary to accommodate potential changes. In the event of adverse weather or unforeseen circumstances, Luxury Holidays Nepal will assist in arranging alternative transportation, such as helicopter flights, or adjusting the trekking route to ensure your safety and continuity of the trek. Refunds and rescheduling will be managed as per our cancellation policy.

Language and Communication

Nepali is the official language of Nepal, but English is widely spoken in Kathmandu and along popular trekking routes. Sherpa guides and teahouse owners are fluent in English, ensuring smooth communication during your trek. For those interested in learning about local culture, basic Nepali greetings like “Namaste” (hello) or “Dhanyabad” (thank you) are appreciated. Internet access is available at most teahouses, though connectivity may be slow and comes with a fee. Satellite phones are carried by guides for emergencies, ensuring reliable communication throughout the trek.
